United States Celebrates 250th Anniversary With Brussels Event

The United States is commemorating its 250th anniversary of independence through the Freedom 250 initiative, a series of nationwide and international events including educational programs and exhibitions. As part of these festivities, the US Embassy in Belgium hosted an invitation-only event on June 29, 2026, at Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels.

The celebration, which cost over five million dollars, featured an air show, fireworks, and a video address from President Donald Trump. The event was attended by high-ranking officials including the Prime Minister of Belgium and the NATO Secretary General, who emphasized shared democratic values and transatlantic ties.

Despite the diplomatic focus, the event faced protests from Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion. These groups demonstrated at the Grand Place, criticizing the privatization of public space and corporate sponsorship of the festivities during a period of extreme heat.
