German Vice Chancellor Warns Transatlantic Relationship Is Disintegrating

German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil declared on Wednesday that the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the United States is disintegrating. Speaking in Berlin, Klingbeil stated that the alliance is undergoing a profound upheaval, citing specific actions by the Donald Trump administration as catalysts for the decline.

Klingbeil pointed to the U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threats to take control of Greenland as primary drivers of the tension. He argued that the military raid in Venezuela violated international law and criticized the U.S. national security strategy for suggesting that Europe faces civilisational erasure.

While Klingbeil, a member of the Social Democratic Party, maintains a critical stance toward Washington, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has adopted a more cautious approach to prevent a total rupture with the United States. Despite these diplomatic frictions, Klingbeil asserted that Europe must defend a rules-based economic order and free trade, even if it is forced to do so without American support.
