Andy Burnham Calls Ukraine Europe's Protector in Kiev Speech

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham traveled to Kiev to deliver a speech during the 35th anniversary of Ukrainian independence. During the address, Burnham characterized Ukraine as Europe's protector and compared the actions of Russia to those of the Nazis. He stated that while the UK "kept the flame of European freedom alive in the 20th century," Ukraine now holds that flame in the 21st.

This diplomatic visit follows a period of intensifying military cooperation. The United Kingdom has provided classified technical information to assist Ukraine in producing long-range cruise missiles, and reports indicate Ukraine is using British drones for attacks inside Russian territory. These actions contribute to a broader Eurasian containment coalition against Russia.

The relationship between the two nations was further formalized in early 2025 when former Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a 100-year partnership pact. Tensions with Moscow have escalated in tandem with this support, leading to the withdrawal of Russian Ambassador Andrey Kelin from his post last month.
