Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Advocates AI Safety Dialogue With China

Jensen Huang announced Nvidia will fund UK AI safety research and urged collaboration with Chinese firms to monitor risks associated with potentially dangerous technology.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang advocated for global cooperation to manage AI risks during a series of appearances in London on Wednesday. Huang stated that Nvidia must collaborate with Chinese AI companies to monitor potentially dangerous technology, arguing that enhanced dialogue is preferable to regulation. This position aligns with recent diplomatic efforts between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese official He Lifeng, as well as statements from Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the prevention of AI misuse.

Addressing AI safety and corporate responsibility, Huang suggested that Nvidia could hypothetically halt chip supplies to customers developing unsafe software, though he noted the company's technology is general-purpose and there are limits to the judgment it applies to other firms. He dismissed current safety fears as overdone and argued that AI should be used to develop its own monitoring and containment systems.

To support these goals, Nvidia is pledging $250 million over five years to provide advanced computing access for AI safety research at UK institutions, including the University of Oxford and University College London. Despite these safety discussions, Huang rejected claims of an AI bubble, asserting that demand for AI infrastructure will continue to exceed supply for several years.
