James Talarico Leads Ken Paxton in Texas Senate Race
Democratic nominee James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton in a high-stakes Texas Senate race despite massive Republican spending and financial backing.
Democratic nominee James Talarico currently leads Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton by 2.2 points in the race for the U.S. Senate in Texas, according to October 20 polling averages from Decision Desk HQ. Talarico has focused his campaign on systemic political reform, proposing the abolition of the Senate filibuster, the end of gerrymandering, and a ban on corporate PACs. He has also called for the suspension of federal gas and diesel taxes to combat an affordability crisis and an end to the war in Iran.
Republican efforts to secure the seat have involved significant financial investment. Ken Paxton has received substantial support from billionaire Elon Musk, who donated over $150 million to a supporting political action committee. Talarico claims that billionaires have spent $200 million on attack ads to support Paxton. In total, Republicans have spent more than $350 million on advertising, yet Talarico has maintained his lead and set a third-quarter fundraising record by raising $64 million.
The outcome of the election is viewed as critical for Senate control, as Republicans face the possibility of losing a Texas Senate seat for the first time since 1988. Talarico has framed the contest as a struggle between the top and bottom of society, stating that "Texas is not for sale."
