United States Owes $260 Million Amid WHO Withdrawal
The United States has failed to pay $260 million in arrears to the World Health Organization following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the agency.
The World Health Organization reports that the United States has not paid approximately $260 million in arrears for 2024 and 2025. This financial shortfall persists despite the U.S. initiating its exit from the agency in January 2025, when President Donald Trump submitted a one-year withdrawal notice.
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the U.S. must meet its financial obligations to finalize the withdrawal process. While the one-year notice period has elapsed, the agency maintains that payment of dues is a necessary condition for the exit. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have defended the move, arguing that the organization tarnished and insulted American contributions.
Tedros warned that the U.S. departure creates a security vacuum that diminishes global health safety. The WHO's annual assembly of member states is scheduled to meet between May 18 and 23 to make a final decision regarding the U.S. withdrawal.
