Trump Administration Pressures States to Cede Election Control

President Donald Trump has launched a governmentwide campaign to increase federal control over state-run elections and challenge the integrity of the voting process. The effort includes pressuring states through the Justice Department, which sued 30 states for unredacted voter data and ordered 29 states and the District of Columbia to preserve 2024 election records. Simultaneously, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has threatened to withhold terrorism-prevention funds from states that refuse to alter their election procedures.

The Supreme Court of the United States blocked a key executive order that would have allowed the U.S. Postal Service to screen mail ballots against approved voter lists. Trump criticized the ruling, claiming the justices lacked the courage to save America. Despite this setback, Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the administration will continue its work to investigate and combat voter fraud.

Further federal actions include the Department of Homeland Security's launch of the Unlawful Voter Initiative, a manual probe to identify noncitizen voters. A federal whistleblower alleges the initiative is error-ridden and potentially violates state laws. Additionally, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin suggested that election officials could face imprisonment for non-compliance with administration policies. Critics argue these measures, alongside efforts to push the SAVE voter eligibility database, are designed to suppress mail voting and cast doubt on the November 3 elections to ensure Republican control.
