Trump Demands Thune Cancel August Recess to Pass SAVE Act

The legislation, which passed the House in February, would require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification for voting. Trump urged Thune to terminate the legislative filibuster to bypass the 60-vote threshold, warning that the party that eliminates the rule first will survive and thrive.

Thune has resisted these demands, stating that Republicans lack the 50 votes needed for a budget resolution or the supermajority required to end the filibuster. He maintains that the immediate priority is funding the government to avoid a September 30 shutdown and negotiating a $95 billion budget to fund a conflict in Iran. Thune suggested the administration should focus on winning over reluctant Republicans rather than blaming leadership.

A group of Republican senators, including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and Ashley Moody, supported the president's push. Senator Lee formally objected to the August recess and requested a roll call vote to block it. Senator John Kennedy also criticized Thune for being too cautious, predicting that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer would ultimately force a government shutdown. Schumer dismissed the SAVE Act as dead on arrival, noting it has been rejected by the courts and Congress.
