Trump Demands Senate Cancel Recess to Pass SAVE Act

President Donald Trump is locked in a public dispute with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, demanding the cancellation of the scheduled August 7 recess until the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act is passed. The legislation, which requires documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification for voting, has stalled in the Senate due to a lack of 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster. Trump has urged Thune to terminate the legislative filibuster to bypass this threshold, warning that failure to do so would allow Democrats to do the same if they regain power.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has resisted these demands, stating that Republicans lack the necessary votes to pass the act or scrap the filibuster. He has maintained that remaining in session without a viable path to victory is pointless and that the bill has already failed multiple floor votes. While a group of at least 11 Republicans, including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and Ashley Moody, have vowed to object to the recess, others like John Cornyn have argued that promising unattainable results could disappoint voters before the midterms.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has declared the proposal dead on arrival, asserting it will not pass. The tension has escalated as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump's patience with Senate leadership is running out. Amid the deadlock, Trump also used a Michigan rally to urge the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act to establish year-round Daylight Saving Time.
