Germany and Israeli Ministers Clash Over Lebanon Military Presence

Germany rejected a permanent Israeli military presence in Lebanon as Israeli ministers vowed to maintain security zones and oppose ceasefire agreements.

The Government of Germany announced its opposition to a permanent Israeli military presence in Lebanon on Monday, stressing the importance of Lebanese territorial integrity and the return of displaced civilians. This diplomatic friction follows a weekend escalation in which the Israel Defense Forces conducted more than 200 strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintained that Israel will not withdraw from the security zone in southern Lebanon, with Katz asserting that soldiers have no restrictions on operating to remove threats. Internally, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged the government to reject any ceasefire in Lebanon, suggesting the territory should serve as an Israeli playground. Ben-Gvir advised Netanyahu to communicate this refusal to U.S. President Donald Trump while maintaining a polite diplomatic tone.

These developments coincide with a memorandum of understanding signed Thursday between the United States and Iran intended to halt hostilities across all fronts. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Israeli calls for intensified attacks, claiming Israel seeks permanent war. The tensions precede a fifth round of U.S.-mediated negotiations between Israel and Lebanon scheduled for Tuesday in Washington.
