Netanyahu Declares War After Hamas Attacks and Faces Intelligence Failures
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war and mobilized 300,000 troops following Hamas attacks, while facing allegations that he ignored prior warnings of the assault.
Following a large-scale attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of war and ordered the immediate mobilization of 300,000 troops. Rejecting initial military estimates that the situation would be stabilized by nightfall, Netanyahu formalized objectives to dismantle Hamas and rejected mediation offers from French President Emmanuel Macron.
To deter Iran and Hezbollah, Netanyahu requested the deployment of two U.S. aircraft carriers toward Lebanon, a request granted by then-President Joe Biden. Netanyahu stated his intention to change the map of the Middle East, initiating a multi-front campaign against Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iranian influence.
In the aftermath, a political conflict has emerged regarding security failures prior to the massacre. Former Israeli security chiefs and reports suggest that President Mohamed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates may have warned Netanyahu of an impending attack based on information from Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Netanyahu denies receiving such warnings from foreign governments or security agencies. Conversely, critics argue that officials within the Shin Bet failed to take preventative action or alert border soldiers despite possessing intelligence.
