Sununu and Pappas Battle in Toss-Up New Hampshire Senate Race
Republican John E. Sununu and Democrat Chris Pappas are locked in a tightening race for a vacant U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire.
Republican John E. Sununu is campaigning for a political comeback in a competitive U.S. Senate race in New Hampshire against Democratic Representative Chris Pappas. The seat became open following the retirement of Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and the outcome is critical for the GOP's effort to maintain its narrow Senate majority.
Sununu, a former senator from a prominent political family, is attempting to attract MAGA supporters while distancing himself from President Donald Trump. He has cited specific disagreements with the administration regarding the approach to Iran and trade with Canada. Despite these frictions, President Trump endorsed Sununu in February after being lobbied by Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Financial investments in the race are high, with Republicans spending approximately $39 million through early October compared to $23 million by Democrats. While Chris Pappas previously held a double-digit lead, recent Rasmussen Reports polling shows the gap narrowing to 49% for Pappas and 44% for Sununu. The Cook Political Report now rates the contest as a toss-up.
