Iran Sets Reparations and Base Closures as War Terms
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei demand reparations and the removal of U.S. bases to end the conflict with the U.S. and Israel.
A joint United States and Israeli military operation on February 28, 2026, targeted command compounds in Tehran, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials. The strikes triggered a regional conflict characterized by U.S.-Israeli bombing campaigns and retaliatory strikes by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against U.S. bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and Iraqi waters.
Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian President, outlined three conditions for peace: the recognition of Iran's legitimate rights, payment of reparations, and firm international guarantees against future aggression. These demands were later expanded by the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who specifically demanded $500 billion in war reparations and the immediate closure of all U.S. military bases in the region.
Controversy surrounded Mojtaba Khamenei's status following the February 28 strike. Leaked audio indicates he survived by stepping into a garden moments before missiles hit his residence, though the attack killed his wife, son, and brother-in-law. While Donald Trump speculated that the leader was dead or badly disfigured, Iranian officials confirmed on March 17 that he is in good health.
President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's terms, asserting that the war will end on American terms. Meanwhile, Pakistan has attempted to act as a bridge builder, maintaining communication between the U.S., Iran, and Gulf nations to facilitate de-escalation.
