South Korea Tests First Domestically Developed Hypersonic Weapon

South Korea flight-tested its first domestic hypersonic weapon to enhance conventional defenses following a North Korean missile test and border tensions.

South Korea flight-tested its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon on October 8, 2026. The weapon is designed to travel at least five times the speed of sound, allowing it to evade missile defense systems and strike targets by surprise within the Korean Peninsula theater of operations.

Lee Jae Myung attended the test and inspected the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile. He stated that the country "must secure our security through our own strength," signaling a push for strengthened conventional defenses to reduce reliance on the United States. This shift follows a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to scale back a major joint military exercise in August.

The test comes amid escalating regional tensions. North Korea conducted its own hypersonic missile test on October 3, with the projectile landing in waters near Japan. Additionally, land mine explosions near the border recently injured three South Korean soldiers. While Lee favors engagement with the North, the development of the Hyunmoo-5 serves as a strategic response to North Korea's expanding nuclear and missile programs.
