2026 Midterms Reach Record $15 Billion in Fundraising

Democratic candidates lead candidate-level fundraising for the 2026 midterms despite hundreds of millions in Republican contributions from megadonor Elon Musk.

The 2026 midterm elections are on track to become the most expensive in history, with over $15 billion raised since the start of 2025. According to Federal Election Commission data, Democratic candidates hold a significant fundraising advantage at the candidate level, outraising Republicans in 27 of 35 Senate races between July and September. This trend is highlighted by Texas nominee James Talarico, who raised a record $60 million in the third quarter.

In contrast, 50 House incumbents—approximately 90% of whom are Republicans—were outraised during the last quarter. To counter this, the Republican Party has relied heavily on megadonors. Elon Musk contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to Republican-aligned groups, including $158 million to the Republican Senate Leadership Fund. These funds supported a PAC that spent over $148 million to support Ken Paxton and attack Talarico in the Texas Senate race.

Despite this financial surge from outside groups, Republicans face an electorate dissatisfied with the agenda of President Donald Trump. Voters have specifically cited high fuel costs and an unpopular war in Iran as primary drivers of this discontent.
