Police Kill Islamist Attacker After Berlin Pride Van Ramming

German police shot and killed Abdul Ballout, an Islamic State supporter who killed one woman and injured 29 people during a Berlin Pride event.

A 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, Abdul Ballout, killed a 65-year-old Polish woman and injured 29 people after ramming a white van into crowds at the Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations in Berlin's Tiergarten park on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Following the crash, Ballout allegedly attacked bystanders with a machete before fleeing the scene. The attack forced organizers to cancel the remainder of the festivities.

Following a nearly 24-hour manhunt involving the GSG 9 counter-terrorism unit, Berlin police shot and killed Ballout on Sunday evening in the Spandau district after he charged officers with a knife at an allotment garden complex. Investigators identified Ballout as a supporter of the Islamic State who had previously attempted to join the group in Syria. He had been released from detention in May 2026 after a juvenile court issued a suspended sentence for preparing subversive violence.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt condemned the act as a heinous attack on society and questioned why a known high-risk offender was not held in custody. The Violence Prevention Network reported that Ballout had been uncooperative with court-ordered deradicalization efforts. The tragedy has sparked a political crisis and intense debate over migration and security laws ahead of state elections, with the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party using the event to push for stricter immigration policies. International leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, expressed solidarity with the LGBTQI+ community.
