Netanyahu Warns of Pre-Election Attacks Amid Political Backlash

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Tuesday that Israel has indications that enemies may attempt to attack the country before the October 27 general elections. In a video filmed at the Tel Nof air base, Netanyahu told adversaries, "Don’t mess with us," though he provided no specific details regarding the nature of the threat.

Opposition leaders, including Yair Lapid and Yair Golan, accused Netanyahu of fear-mongering and using military bases as backdrops for campaign videos to undermine the election. Following demands for transparency, Netanyahu briefed Lapid late Tuesday night. While the Prime Minister's Office maintained that detailed warnings of attacks on various fronts were presented, Lapid stated there was "no reason to put the public in a panic" and asserted that elections would proceed on time.

Israeli security officials and the Israel Defense Forces reported no concrete intelligence indicating an imminent threat and have not raised alert levels. However, officials remain vigilant regarding potential Iranian retaliation and escalation in the West Bank. Amid this tension, Lapid and Naftali Bennett urged the government to enlist 15,000 ultra-Orthodox citizens to address critical combat troop shortages.

Separately, Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened Hamas leaders based outside Gaza, stating they are "in the crosshairs" and should not "die peacefully in their beds." This follows ongoing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, where Israeli forces occupy nearly 6 percent of Lebanese territory.
