Oman Proposes Regional Management of Strait of Hormuz

The Government of Oman has proposed the creation of a joint regional mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to shift control away from Iran. The proposal is modeled after the Strait of Malacca and suggests a system where users pay voluntary fees to fund navigation, environmental protection, and search and rescue operations.

Despite reported regional backing for the plan, implementation is considered unlikely due to the current geopolitical climate and an ongoing conflict with the United States. The waterway remains in a state of de facto closure, a condition that has persisted for four months following the collapse of a previous ceasefire agreement.

While some claims suggest the strait has reopened, ship-tracking data contradicts these reports. The closure remains in effect following the decision by the Federal government of the United States to reinstate a naval blockade in the region.
