Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S. Tensions

Iran offers to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States lifts sanctions and reduces its regional military presence.

The Government of Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within two days, provided the United States meets seven specific conditions. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated the proposal, developed with Qatari mediators, requires the U.S. to lift sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, restore oil waivers, release frozen funds in Qatar, and reduce its military footprint in the region. Iran also demands an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon and formal recognition of shipping routes discussed with Oman.

This diplomatic overture follows a period of intense escalation. Analysis shows Iran and its proxies launched over 115 drone and missile strikes against 26 U.S. military bases across the Middle East through August, causing billions of dollars in damage to early warning systems and aircraft hangars. In response to these attacks, the Supreme Leader of Iran warned that any U.S. or Israeli strikes would trigger a reaction with no geographic limits.

Recent communications, including a letter from Vice President JD Vance to security official Mohsen Rezaei, have signaled a shift in tone. While President Donald Trump noted that Iran wants to negotiate, he questioned Tehran's reliability and threatened that the U.S. could target Iranian nuclear sites within 10 minutes. Rezaei responded by warning that Iran would deliver devastating blows with new weaponry if attacked, though he maintained that diplomacy remains open if the conditions are fulfilled.
