Indian Parliament Adjourned After Protests Over Temple Funds and Paper Leaks

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned on July 31, 2026, following intense protests by Opposition members during the Monsoon Session. The demonstrations centered on allegations of embezzled donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, recurring paper leaks, and police actions against student protesters.

Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to silence Gen Z through the use of FIRs and social media takedowns. In response, Speaker Om Birla criticized the use of placards and unconventional attire, stating such actions violate parliamentary conventions. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condemned the Opposition's behavior as street-style politics that undermines the dignity of the House.

Despite the disruption, the Lok Sabha successfully passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The house had previously cleared legislation making insults to the national song Vande Mataram a punishable offense. Prime Minister Narendra Modi signaled a hardline approach toward exam irregularities, asserting that there would be no mercy for those compromising the future of children. Both houses are scheduled to reconvene on August 3.
