Donald Trump Threatens Canada With 100% Tariffs Over China Deal

President Donald Trump threatened substantial retaliation and 100% tariffs against Canada if it proceeds with a trade agreement with China.

Donald Trump announced that the United States will implement a "very substantial" response if Canada proceeds with a trade agreement negotiated with China. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump claimed that such a deal would allow China to "take over Canada."

The president previously warned that he would impose 100% tariffs on Canada to block the arrangement. The tension follows a deal struck last month by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and Canadian canola oil.

This diplomatic friction occurs as several Western allies, including the United Kingdom and Germany, seek to reset relations with Beijing. These shifts follow disputes with the Trump administration regarding tariffs and demands concerning Greenland.
