In an interview with The New York Times, Greer asserted that the administration treated the widening trade deficit as an economic emergency, and that the strategy has since helped reduce that deficit while increasing wages and reshoring businesses.

Greer argued that the policy is driven by economics rather than foreign policy, aiming to protect American manufacturing and agricultural production. He stated that the approach has strengthened the U.S. negotiating position with partners including India, Japan, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

Despite these claims, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down a significant portion of the tariff program. Greer expressed regret over the ruling but indicated that the administration is pursuing alternative legal authorities to recreate the levies. These efforts will specifically target countries with surplus production or those utilizing forced labor in manufacturing to preserve the administration's trade agenda.
