Marco Rubio Visits Mumbai to Advance US-India Trade Deal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Indian officials in Mumbai to discuss a pending trade deal, defense cooperation, and counter-terrorism efforts.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a three-day official visit to India on October 20, 2026, arriving in Mumbai for bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar. The discussions focused on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, specifically addressing defense, energy security, emerging technologies, and critical minerals. During a Freedom 250 reception, Rubio described the strategic alignment between the two nations as "extraordinary," noting that the partnership will help shape the 21st century.
Rubio laid a wreath at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to honor the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, including six American citizens. He used the ceremony to reaffirm a shared commitment to combating terrorism. While in Mumbai, Rubio also met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Gateway of India. Simultaneously, Subramanyam Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held meetings with a US Congressional delegation to discuss improving the ease of doing business in India and deepening Indo-Pacific cooperation.
The visit takes place amid bilateral tensions over US punitive tariffs on Indian goods, H-1B visa fee increases, and disagreements over military clashes in May 2025. Despite these frictions, Rubio stated that Washington is "very close" to finalizing a bilateral trade agreement. He also defended the US decision to temporarily waive sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports to stabilize global energy prices. Rubio is scheduled to travel to Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Wednesday to visit the Reliance refinery.
