Trump Renames Lake Ontario Lake America Amid Trade War

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 27, 2026, officially renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America for all United States federal purposes. The directive requires the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to update official maps and databases. Trump linked the move to a deteriorating trade relationship with Canada, claiming the country has been "ripping us off for decades" and suggesting that Canada could eventually be absorbed as the 51st U.S. state.

The renaming follows the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations on August 21. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian goods, while Prime Minister Mark Carney retaliated with matching tariffs on U.S. imports effective September 8. Tensions escalated further as Trump threatened additional tariffs on Canadian automobiles and steel.

Canadian leadership and Indigenous groups have overwhelmingly rejected the order. Mark Carney asserted that the lake's name, derived from the Wendat word Ontari’io, predates both nations and will remain Lake Ontario "today and forever." Ontario Premier Doug Ford mocked the decision as a "Saturday Night Live" skit and installed multiple billboards across Ontario declaring the lake is "Lake Ontario Now and Always."

Within the U.S., the move drew condemnation from New York Governor Kathy Hochul and several Democratic leaders, who characterized it as a distraction from domestic economic issues. While Google updated its maps to show Lake America for U.S. users, MapQuest refused to comply, launching a tool for users to customize the lake's name.
