Sabinal Mayor Erik Gomez Criticizes Texas GOP Over Racism
Sabinal Mayor Erik Gomez has voiced frustration with the Texas Republican Party's failure to condemn racism ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Sabinal Mayor and U.S. Border Patrol agent Erik Gomez has emerged as a critical voice for moderate Latino conservatives within the Texas Republican Party. Gomez campaigned for U.S. Senator John Cornyn during the Republican primary, warning that a victory for Attorney General Ken Paxton would harm the state. Despite these efforts, Paxton defeated Cornyn by 27 points in the primary.
Gomez expressed deep frustration over the party's direction, specifically citing the failure of some GOP candidates to condemn racism. This tension led Gomez to vote for Democrat Jon Rosenthal over Republican nominee Bo French, a decision driven by French's racist social media posts. While Gomez remains a Republican, he refused to disclose whether he voted for Paxton in the general election.
The internal party strife coincides with broader political battles in Texas. Democratic candidate James Talarico campaigned against Paxton by contrasting his own legislative record with the Attorney General's legal history. Meanwhile, the Pacific Time Zone super PAC, founded by Elon Musk, invested tens of millions of dollars to support Paxton's candidacy.
