Trump and Kennedy Jr. Purge CDC Over Vaccine Policies

President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have overseen a systemic overhaul of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), marked by the firing of Director Susan Monarez and the resignation of several senior officials, including Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry. Trump stated that disagreements over COVID-19 vaccine efficacy have "ripped apart" the agency and demanded that pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, publicly disclose data to justify the success of their products.

Secretary Kennedy Jr. has implemented a strategic refocusing of the CDC to prioritize infectious disease tracking and pandemic response. His actions include rescinding emergency use authorizations for COVID-19 vaccines, canceling $500 million in vaccine research, and removing all members of the agency's internal vaccine panel. These policy shifts led pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens to restrict vaccine availability, with CVS reporting that shots are now available in only 13 states and Washington, D.C., and require a prescription.

The purge has triggered a backlash from nine former CDC directors and Democratic lawmakers. Senator Bernie Sanders accused Kennedy Jr. of launching a "war on science," while departing CDC officials warned that decisions are now based on opinion rather than data.
