Trump Orders Israel to Halt Beirut Strikes Amid Iran Deadlock
President Donald Trump ordered Israel to stand down from strikes in Beirut as Iran demands a total withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon to resume negotiations.
President Donald Trump intervened to restrict Israeli military operations in Lebanon, ordering Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt planned strikes on the Dahiyeh stronghold in Beirut. Trump reportedly used profanity during a phone call with Netanyahu, claiming the Israeli leader would be in prison without his support. This shift follows an initial Israeli ground offensive in southern Lebanon, where forces captured symbolic sites like Beaufort Castle to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure.
The escalation led the Government of Iran to suspend indirect negotiations with the United States. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has since declared that regional peace is impossible unless Israel withdraws from Lebanon and recognizes its territorial integrity. Iran is leveraging the crisis to tie the Lebanese and Iranian fronts together, rejecting any ceasefire that does not apply across all fronts.
While Trump announced that no troops would enter Beirut and is seeking a framework to extend a ceasefire by 60 days, Israel continues to face a war of attrition from Hezbollah's fiber-optic-guided drones and rockets in its northern regions. Despite these tensions, the Israel Ministry of Defense reported record-breaking defense exports of $19.2 billion for 2025. France has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to address concerns over Lebanese sovereignty.
