Elon Musk Donates Record $366 Million to Republican Midterms

Elon Musk has become the largest known donor of the 2026 midterm cycle, contributing $366 million to Republican groups to help retain congressional control.

Elon Musk has emerged as the largest known donor of the 2026 midterm election cycle, contributing approximately $366 million to Republican groups and his own super PAC. Since July, he has funneled over $276 million into the GOP effort, including a record $158 million donation to the Senate Leadership Fund. Other major contributions include $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC.

Much of the spending targets Texas, where Musk's companies Tesla and X are headquartered. His America PAC spent over $76 million to deploy nearly 3,000 paid canvassers to knock on 6.5 million doors across seven Senate battlegrounds and nearly three dozen House races. A significant portion of these resources supports Republican nominee Ken Paxton in a tight Texas Senate race against Democrat James Talarico. The campaign strategy emphasizes culture war issues, specifically targeting Democratic candidates over transgender rights and socialism.

This financial surge follows a volatile relationship with President Donald Trump, including a public falling out in May 2025 over federal spending and Musk's tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency. After reconciling, Trump awarded Musk the National Medal of Science. While Musk provided the funding, he has taken a more hands-off operational role than in 2024, delegating major decisions to adviser Chris Young. In response, House Democrats have called for investigations into Musk's government contracts with SpaceX.
