Melania Trump Brokers Humanitarian Ceasefire for Oleshky
First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire in Oleshky to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate approximately 2,000 civilians from the Russian-occupied city.
First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky to facilitate the delivery of food, medicine, and water to approximately 2,000 stranded residents. The agreement, supported by Pope Leo XIV, establishes a designated safe passageway for the evacuation of civilians, primarily the elderly, who may choose to travel to either Russia or Ukraine.
While the White House initially announced a start date of October 29, the ceasefire took effect at 3 a.m. Kyiv time on October 27. Russian General Valery Gerasimov implemented a regime of silence in the Kherson direction to allow engineers to clear mines from access roads. Negotiations were led by Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russian Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, who described the gradual operation as extremely challenging.
This humanitarian pause occurs amid broader diplomatic volatility. President Donald Trump recently waived several Russia-related sanctions and resumed Russian diesel imports, moves President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized as a weak decision. Simultaneously, Russia and Ukraine continued large-scale aerial strikes across other regions, including ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv that occurred shortly after the Oleshky truce began.
Despite the localized truce, the Kremlin stated it will maintain its overall offensive pace. However, representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are scheduled to meet for technical-level peace talks in Abu Dhabi during the first half of November.
