Robert Fico Warns Against NATO-Russia Conflict

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned on Thursday that Europe is moving dangerously close to a direct clash between NATO and Russia. In a Facebook post and public remarks in Prešov, Fico accused Western nations of seeking a "pretext" for a major conflict and stated that hostilities in Ukraine have "gotten out of control."

Fico expressed specific concern that Slovakia could be pressured to commit thousands of soldiers if NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause is invoked. He asserted that he will do everything to ensure the country is not drawn into such a war, questioning the necessity of deploying troops to defend allies. He criticized European leaders for using "belligerent rhetoric" to distract from domestic issues like high energy prices and illegal migration.

Fico, who has already halted government weapons shipments to Kyiv, argued that the Western strategy to "bring Russia to its knees" has failed. He advocated for negotiations with Moscow, though he acknowledged Slovakia's membership and obligations to NATO.

In response to the regional tension, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the European Union of rapid militarization. President Vladimir Putin denied intentions to attack NATO countries but warned that deploying European forces to Ukraine would constitute war.
