France Faces Worst Riots in Decades Over Cost of Living

President Emmanuel Macron vowed to prosecute rioters after nationwide protests over inflation and education funding escalated into widespread looting and the burning of the Limoges town hall.

Nationwide protests across France escalated into violent riots over the weekend of October 17-18, 2026, leaving between 550,000 and 800,000 people in the streets. The unrest began in September as student demonstrations in Créteil over dilapidated school facilities and teacher shortages, later merging with the Yellow Vest movement and labor unions to protest soaring inflation, fuel prices, and a fraying social security system.

Emmanuel Macron condemned the "unbridled violence" in a national address, attributing the chaos to criminals and insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups. The violence resulted in approximately 2,400 arrests and injuries to nearly 1,000 emergency responders. Most notably, rioters deliberately torched the 19th-century Limoges town hall, causing its roof and bell tower to collapse. In Paris, Marseille, and Lyon, masked groups looted roughly 1,500 businesses, including luxury boutiques and supermarkets, and breached municipal buildings.

Political fallout intensified as the government struggled with a record public debt of $4 trillion. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu implemented localized curfews and proposed a 2027 budget featuring public sector pay freezes. While far-right leader Marine Le Pen characterized the unrest as a crisis of authority and a failure of governance, far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon blamed government incompetence and policing tactics. Internationally, U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance attributed the violence to mass immigration and a failure of assimilation, while the Iranian Foreign Ministry accused Macron of diplomatic hypocrisy regarding civil unrest.
