Polls Show Deepening U.S. and Global Divide Over Israel

Recent public opinion data reveals a significant decline in bipartisan support for Israel nearly three years after the war in Gaza began. An AP-NORC poll of 3,040 U.S. adults found that approximately 30% of respondents, including half of Democrats and 30% of Jewish adults, believe Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians. While 60% of Republicans view U.S. support for Israel as about right, 58% of Democrats believe the U.S. is too supportive.

Internal fractures are appearing within the Jewish American community, with religious Jews more likely to view military operations as justified while secular Jews more frequently describe the actions as genocide. These ideological rifts have led 40% of Jewish adults to report disagreements with family members over the conflict. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains broadly unpopular, holding a favorable view among only 20% of U.S. adults and facing disapproval from approximately 60% of Jewish adults.

Conversely, a survey by Echelon Insights for the Washington Free Beacon shows strong support for Israel among likely Republican primary voters. In that poll, 68% believe the U.S. should completely or mostly support Israel, and 74% approve of how Donald Trump has managed the U.S.-Israel relationship. However, a separate AP-NORC finding indicates that 70% of surveyed Jewish adults view Trump unfavorably.

Global sentiment reflects similar trends. A YouGov poll found that half of the British public believes Israel is committing genocide, while a Pew Research Center survey of 36 nations showed a general lack of confidence in Netanyahu's leadership.
