UK Strengthens Cyber Defenses Against AI National Security Threats
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan announced enhanced cyber defenses and called for stricter safety measures from AI companies following intelligence briefings on national security risks.
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan announced a strengthening of British cyber defenses and urged frontier AI companies to increase their safety efforts. The move follows a cabinet briefing from MI5, MI6, and GCHQ regarding AI threats to national security. Narayan argued that the United Kingdom cannot rely solely on technology companies to police their own models and must expand domestic AI infrastructure.
The announcement coincides with warnings from Geoffrey Irving, a former chief scientist at the UK AI Security Institute, who claimed current security measures are insufficient to prevent adversarial countries from stealing cutting-edge models. In response to insider risks, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella advocated for the implementation of an emergency brake in AI models to ensure systems remain contained.
While several nations have called for international safety standards, the United Kingdom and United States have not yet joined those movements. However, the UK Prime Minister intends to use the G20 presidency next year to champion global AI safety principles.
