Russia Deploys Jet-Powered Geran Drones in Ukraine Campaign

Russia has escalated aerial strikes in Ukraine using high-speed Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet drones, prompting Ukraine to prototype new interceptors and launch retaliatory strikes.

The Federal Government of Russia has escalated its aerial campaign in Ukraine by deploying Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered attack drones. These models fly higher and faster than previous propeller-driven versions, with the Geran-5 reaching estimated speeds of 600km/h and altitudes of 6,000m. This shift has blurred the distinction between drones and cruise missiles, leading to round-the-clock strikes on cities including Kyiv, where air-raid sirens have sounded for up to 20 hours a day.

Russian drone deployment increased from 1,500 units in July to 3,500 by September. To support this surge, Russia constructed a new drone base in the Rostov region within six weeks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian intercept rates for these drones have risen from 57% to approximately 75%, though the military still struggles with reduced response times due to the drones' speed.

In response, Ukraine is prototyping new interceptors and conducting long-range drone strikes against Russian energy sites and oil refineries. European intelligence officials have warned that these new Russian capabilities may be used to test NATO air defense boundaries, while President Vladimir Putin has denied preparations for conflict with Europe.
