Donald Trump Nominates Heidi Overton to Lead FDA
President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration following the May resignation of Marty Makary.
President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to serve as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Overton, a physician with a Ph.D. in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, currently serves as the deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and previously worked as chief policy officer for the America First Policy Institute.
Overton succeeds Marty Makary, who resigned in May after disagreements with Trump regarding flavored vape products. The nomination arrives as the FDA manages staffing shortages and a series of foodborne illness outbreaks involving Salmonella and cyclosporiasis. Overton has already influenced agency direction through executive actions, including an order to split the MMR vaccine into three separate shots.
While Trump praised Overton as a "ROCKSTAR" capable of delivering a "TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda," the nomination may cause internal friction. Reports indicate Overton has disagreed with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over the U.S. food pyramid and the regulation of the peptide industry. Additionally, Overton has advocated for the FDA to restrict access to abortion pills, which she described as "far more dangerous to women."
The nomination now moves to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee for evaluation.
