Marco Rubio Visits India to Advance Energy and Trade Deals

Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India to secure increased energy purchases and finalize a long-delayed free trade agreement with the government of India.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted a multi-day visit to India on October 20 and 21 to advance bilateral cooperation on energy, defense, and technology. In Mumbai, Rubio met with External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for trilateral talks on regional connectivity and trade, particularly as the UAE faces export challenges due to the U.S. war in Iran.

Rubio traveled to the Reliance Industries-owned Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat, which he called a refining superpower. He urged the company to increase the refining of Venezuelan crude to stabilize global markets and help India diversify its energy supply away from Russian oil. This effort aligns with President Donald Trump's push for increased Indian purchases of American energy and military equipment. Trump also characterized a proposed Reliance investment in a new U.S. oil refinery as a $300 billion deal, though the company has not officially confirmed the amount.

Regarding trade and immigration, Rubio stated that a long-delayed free trade agreement is incredibly close to completion, with only technical details remaining. He defended current U.S. visa and tariff reforms as global efforts to fix 20 years of neglect in the immigration system rather than targeted actions against India. Rubio noted that President Trump avoided certain restrictions to protect the U.S.-India relationship while using tariffs as a balancing act to pressure parties in the Russia-Ukraine war.
