Mark Carney Rejects Rushed Trade Deal With Donald Trump
Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Canada will wait for a new U.S. president if a mutually advantageous trade deal cannot be reached with Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada is prepared to wait for a new U.S. president if a mutually advantageous trade deal cannot be reached with the administration of Donald Trump. Speaking in Montreal following the 21st Kennedy EU summit, Carney stated that Canada will not conclude an agreement simply for the sake of doing so if it is not in the national interest.
During the same period, Carney introduced a new national security strategy that identifies frontier AI as a strategic risk due to its ability to identify holes in cyber defenses. He advocated for the creation of a technology stability board to regulate AI, arguing that industries struggle to regulate themselves.
On the international stage, Carney discussed deepening ties with the European Union to achieve the closest possible association without full membership. He also reaffirmed Canada's commitment to Ukraine by announcing a 500 million euro contribution to a larger loan package.
