Canada and EU to Launch Alliance for the Future
Canada and the European Union will establish an associate membership and strategic alliance in Montreal to reduce economic dependence on the United States and China.
Canada and the European Union will endorse an unprecedented strategic partnership called the Alliance for the Future during a summit in Montreal on October 29 and 30. The agreement establishes an associate membership for Canada, a status first proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Strasbourg. The full scope of this membership will be finalized by the 2027 Canada-EU Summit.
Building upon the existing Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the alliance focuses on deepening integration across defense, energy, technology, critical minerals, and economic security. Both parties intend to use the partnership to secure supply chains against unreliable trading partners, specifically China, and to reduce their mutual dependence on the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will host the event, which will be attended by European Council President Antonio Costa and President von der Leyen. The initiative is driven by the Treasury Board of Canada and the European Union as a means of diversifying their geopolitical and economic ties.
