NATO Deploys Surveillance Assets to Black Sea After Ship Attacks

NATO is deploying patrol aircraft and drones to the Black Sea following a surge in attacks on cargo ships near Romania and Bulgaria.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is deploying maritime patrol aircraft, radars, and drones to the Black Sea to strengthen its eastern flank. This move follows a series of attacks on cargo ships near Romania and Bulgaria, including the sinking of a Greek container ship by naval drones in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone during October.

While Romania and military analysts identify Russia as the perpetrator, the Russian government denies targeting Ukraine's neighbors and claims European military aid is escalating the conflict. The maritime instability has disrupted oil and grain exports for both Russia and Ukraine, forcing Ukraine to divert shipments through Romania's Sulina Canal.

In response to the volatility, Turkey proposed a narrow maritime ceasefire. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted growing international interest in the proposal, but Russia has rejected it. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that the continued disruption of grain exports could trigger a global agricultural crisis.
