Trump Rebrands AI as Super Intelligence and Rejects Global Oversight

President Donald J. Trump announced a formal rebranding of artificial intelligence to super intelligence (SI) during a September 22 address to the United Nations General Assembly. Trump argued that the term artificial makes the technology sound fake and directed the federal government to adopt SI in all official documents. Alongside this change, he announced plans to establish an AI Force, modeled after the Space Force, and appoint an AI czar to ensure U.S. technological dominance over China.

Trump explicitly rejected international efforts to regulate the technology, characterizing such proposals as a globalist scheme and dismissing existential risks as a hoax. This stance created a sharp divide at the UN, where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and a coalition of over 20 nations urged for human oversight and international law to prevent risks like biological weapons and child exploitation. French President Emmanuel Macron also called for immediate action to avoid repeating past regulatory mistakes made with social networks.

Simultaneously, industry leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei briefed the UN Security Council, warning that poorly managed AI could pose a risk to humanity. While Altman and Amodei advocated for global safety standards and democratic control, the Trump administration maintained that existing U.S. laws are sufficient. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has emerged as a leading candidate for the AI czar role, having already led discussions with Chinese officials on a national security notification mechanism for AI incidents.
