US Markets Plummet as Fed Holds Rates and Trump Threatens Iran
US stock markets crashed Wednesday following a divided Federal Reserve rate decision and threats of military retaliation by President Donald Trump against Iran.
US stock markets plummeted on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve System maintained interest rates in a divided decision. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,153 points, while the Nasdaq entered correction territory and the S&P 500 fell 1.5%. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh reiterated a commitment to a 2 percent inflation target but reduced forward guidance, contributing to the volatility. Internal discord was evident as three officials—Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan—dissented in favor of a 25-basis-point hike, pushing 30-year Treasury yields above 5.2%.
Market instability was exacerbated by geopolitical conflict. President Donald Trump threatened a forceful military response against Iran following overnight attacks on US assets, including a surprise missile strike in Jordan. Trump stated that Washington would hit Tehran hard and that they would get a beating. Consequently, Brent crude oil prices surged 7.3 percent to $88.09 per barrel due to the resumed fighting.
Sector-specific losses hit technology and semiconductor firms like Nvidia and Micron amid uncertainty over AI investment returns. Additionally, Hims & Hers Health saw its stock tumble 14.7 percent following allegations from the Federal Trade Commission and state authorities that the company mishandled sensitive consumer health data by sharing it with third-party advertisers.
