Ukrainian Drone Firms Seek Defense Partnerships in Japan and Taiwan

Ukrainian drone manufacturers are partnering with Japanese and Taiwanese firms to export combat-proven technology and reduce dependence on Chinese components amid rising Indo-Pacific tensions.

Ukrainian drone manufacturers are aggressively pursuing partnerships with Japanese and Taiwanese firms to expand their military technology into Asian markets. This strategic push, led by companies such as UFORCE, Skyeton, General Cherry, and Swarmer, is driven by regional tensions involving China and the potential for conflict over Taiwan.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced in February that Kyiv was ready to share sea drone technologies with Japan. Following this, UFORCE CEO Oleg Rogynskyy met with Japanese officials in April 2026 to pitch the production of thousands of attack drones for regional defense. Additionally, the firm Swarmer conducted an AI-driven drone swarm demonstration for the Japanese military, which was arranged by Rakuten. The Government of Japan is currently examining these new warfare options and has allocated $2 billion for drone systems under the defense build-up led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

To secure supply chains, the Ukrainian drone association IRON led a delegation to Taichung, Taiwan, in May 2026 to find component suppliers and reduce reliance on Chinese parts. The practical application of these technologies is already evident in the region; in April 2026, U.S. troops utilized waterborne UFORCE drones during a secretive military exercise near the Philippines.
