Tech CEOs Convince Trump to Drop AI Oversight Body

President Donald Trump withdrew a proposal to create a federal AI oversight body after receiving opposition from several prominent technology executives. The proposed organization, originally suggested by Google DeepMind leader Demis Hassabis, would have operated as an industry-funded standards and testing body modeled after FINRA to evaluate frontier AI models before their deployment.

Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms, Elon Musk of SpaceX, and Jensen Huang of NVIDIA separately contacted the president last week to argue against the framework. The CEOs claimed that a formal oversight body would create a regulatory moat, which would effectively cement the market dominance of existing competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic by making it harder for others to enter the space.

Following these discussions, the administration dropped the proposal. White House advisor David Sacks, who advocates for voluntary rather than mandatory regulatory frameworks, is expected to shape the direction of future AI policy.
