Donald Trump Challenges Legitimacy of Brazil Election Results
Donald Trump and Steve Bannon challenged the re-election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil, citing extended voting hours as evidence of a rigged process.
President Donald Trump and advisor Steve Bannon have challenged the legitimacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's re-election in Brazil. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews, Trump described the result as another rigged election, though he provided no evidence for the claim. Bannon urged the U.S. administration to sever diplomatic and trade ties with Brazil, characterizing the victory as a theft.
The controversy stems from a decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend nationwide voting hours by two hours following transport failures. The campaign of Flávio Bolsonaro argues this extension makes the outcome impossible to recognize. Bolsonaro's lawyers intend to petition for the annulment of the results.
Lula won the runoff with 51.79% of the vote, defeating Bolsonaro by approximately 4.4 million votes. Despite the challenges, Brazil's electoral court president, Kassio Nunes Marques, has recognized the victory. The dispute occurs amid already strained relations between the two nations following a 25% tariff Trump imposed on Brazilian imports in July.
