Fed Chair Kevin Warsh Signals AI Impact on Rates

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to preview October interest rate decisions in Bangkok while identifying the AI investment boom as a primary driver of global inflation.

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to provide forward guidance on interest rate decisions for the upcoming October 27-28 policy meeting during the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok. Despite market expectations of a pause, Warsh refused to prejudge the meeting, marking a shift in the central bank's communication strategy. This follows a September rate hike to a 3.75-4.00% target range, the first increase in three years, implemented as consumer price index inflation rose to 3.7%.

Warsh characterized the surge in artificial intelligence investment as the most consequential economic change of his lifetime. He described AI as a positive supply shock in the medium term, though he warned it is currently creating a demand-side shock that puts upward pressure on prices. To study these effects, Warsh initiated a Federal Reserve task force that will hold a public hearing on AI's impact on the labor market in the San Francisco Bay Area on November 16.

Global central bankers in Bangkok echoed concerns that the AI boom is driving a scramble for capital, potentially leading to structurally higher neutral interest rates. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has criticized the Federal Reserve board as very political and hostile, maintaining that borrowing costs remain too high. Internal divisions persist within the Fed, with Vice Chair John Williams suggesting another hike may be appropriate, while Governor Michelle Bowman expressed no urgency to act.
