Chennamma, the wife of former Indian Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, died on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. She was 89 years old. Chennamma had been admitted to the hospital on July 16 for respiratory ailments, chest congestion, and breathing complications. According to the hospital, she suffered a massive cardiac arrest at 4 p.m. despite being on the road to recovery.

H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister and son of the deceased, described his mother as a simple woman whose sacrifices enabled his father to reach the country's highest office. Political leaders across the spectrum expressed grief over her passing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted her humility and passion for serving society, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described her strength as an enduring presence during her husband's public service. Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the family residence in Padmanabhanagar to pay his respects, calling her an exemplary wife and a pillar of strength.

Chennamma was previously known for surviving a 2001 acid attack carried out by a nephew during a family dispute. Her mortal remains were kept in Bengaluru for public respects until Sunday afternoon before being transported to her home district of Hassan for cremation on Monday.
