Trump Orders DOJ Probe Into Democrats After Midterm Losses

President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice to investigate Democratic lawmakers for alleged extortion following a midterm sweep that gave Democrats control of Congress.

President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice to initiate a criminal inquiry into Democratic leaders, accusing them of "extortion at the highest level" and "weaponization." The directive follows a midterm election in which Democrats seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Trump alleges that Democrats have sent threatening letters to Republican donors and party members, including threats of imprisonment, and have targeted administration officials with impeachment.

Trump specifically cited threats against Attorney General Todd Blanche and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. He also singled out Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, claiming she attempted to intimidate young conservatives and deter college graduates from joining his administration. Trump urged Republican supporters to report these alleged criminal acts directly to the White House or the Justice Department.

In response to the election results, incoming House Oversight Committee Chairman Robert Garcia warned Trump allies to "lawyer up," signaling aggressive probes into the Trump family's business dealings and the administration's handling of the Epstein files. Other Democrats, including Representative Jamie Raskin, have called for investigations into the Department of Government Efficiency and criticized Attorney General Blanche as an "instrument of revenge."

As the new Congress prepares to convene on January 3, the administration is bracing for legal battles. The Justice Department has already advanced an expansive interpretation of executive privilege to limit the disclosure of information to congressional committees.
