India and Russia Expand Defense and Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

The Government of India and the Federal Government of Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic, industrial, and technological cooperation through a series of high-level engagements. From August 4 to 7, 2026, the fifth India-Russia Army Land System Sub-Group conference took place in New Delhi to accelerate defense collaboration. This meeting followed the 14th assembly of the Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, where both nations agreed to expand mechanisms to combat violent extremism and digital financial terror channels.

These recent engagements build upon a 2025 annual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin, which resulted in multi-billion dollar agreements. Key defense acquisitions include five S-400 missile systems and four Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates. The two nations also established a joint venture to manufacture 200 Kamov-226 helicopters within India.

Beyond military hardware, the partnership has expanded into energy and naval infrastructure. The countries agreed to a joint study for a Russian gas pipeline to India, while the Russian-built aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Goa.
