Middle East Conflict Expands Into Broad Regional War
Israel's military operations in Gaza have evolved into a regional war involving Iran, the United States, and multiple neighboring states three years after the October 7 attacks.
Three years after Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis during the October 7, 2023 attacks, the Cabinet of Israel has expanded its military operations into a broad regional war. Israeli forces have killed over 73,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, reducing entire towns to rubble and utilizing artificial intelligence for target selection.
The conflict has since spread beyond Gaza to include military offensives in Syria and the effective annexation of southern Lebanon. This escalation triggered a wider war with Iran involving the United States, which subsequently sparked conflicts between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The instability has further prompted a mutual defense pact between Pakistan and Turkey, while overlapping wars in Sudan and Ethiopia continue to destabilize the region.
While the federal government of the United States initially provided critical military support and vetoed UN ceasefire resolutions, political attitudes in the US and UK have shifted due to perceived hypocrisy regarding international law. United Nations Secretary General António Guterres characterized the Israeli response as "collective punishment," and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced ICC indictments for war crimes.
