Donald Trump Pressures Federal Reserve to Cut Interest Rates
President Donald Trump is urging Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh to lower interest rates ahead of a key monetary policy meeting on September 16.
President Donald Trump has publicly pressured Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the central bank board to lower interest rates, urging policymakers via social media to "BE PATRIOTS for a change." Trump argued that high rates place the United States at an "unfair disadvantage" and threatened to cut trade with countries where the U.S. maintains a trade deficit if rates are not reduced.
The demands come as the Federal Reserve prepares for its September 15-16 monetary policy meeting. While Trump advocates for lower rates to maintain an economic advantage, investors currently price in a 60% chance of a quarter-point rate hike. This likelihood increased following a surprise rise in August hiring, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 162,000 and unemployment holding steady at 4.1%.
Federal Reserve officials remain divided. Inflation currently stands at 3.7%, nearly double the bank's 2% target. Chair Kevin Warsh has curtailed forward guidance, though he previously noted that policymakers must be confident inflation is moving toward their objective. Other officials, including Governor Christopher Waller and New York Fed President John Williams, have expressed varying views on whether to hold rates steady or hike based on upcoming producer and consumer price index data. Economists warn that premature cuts could undermine price stability and signal a loss of central bank independence shortly before the November 3 midterm elections.
