Andy Burnham Leads Effort to Repair Ties With Farmers

Government leader Andy Burnham is leading an initiative to repair the relationship between the UK government and the agricultural sector. The effort follows intense protests, including tractor demonstrations in Westminster, sparked by inheritance taxes introduced under the Keir Starmer administration. Last year, a record 6,300 forestry, fishing, and farming businesses closed.

To address the crisis, Burnham appointed Angela Eagle as the new environment secretary. Eagle has conducted several farm visits alongside the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to establish a rapport with agricultural workers. Burnham stated that the UK needed to "guarantee our own food production" and acknowledged that the government had a "long way to go to build back trust."

Government sources indicate the next budget may include a U-turn on inheritance tax or increased funding for nature-friendly farming as a sweetener for the industry. Despite these outreach efforts, a Country Land and Business Association poll indicates deep resentment, with 0% of farmers stating they would vote Labour again.
